Planning a surprise proposal can be both nerve-wracking and exhilarating. The art of orchestrating the perfect proposal involves careful thought, organization, and a dash of creativity. From choosing the ideal location to capturing the magical moment on camera, every detail must be meticulously planned.

You’ve probably spent countless hours brainstorming ideas, considering your partner's preferences, and seeking advice from close friends to create a personalized and unforgettable surprise proposal. It is a perfect blend of romance, anticipation, and secrecy that makes surprise proposals a heartwarming and cherished experience for you, your partner and anyone else you choose to include (like me!).

Where to Start?

When planning a proposal, there are several key factors to consider that can make the moment truly unforgettable. First and foremost, it is crucial to think about the location. Selecting a place that holds significance for both partners can add an extra layer of sentimental value to the proposal. Whether it's at a favorite park, on a scenic beach, or in a charming café, the chosen setting should contribute to the overall ambiance and create a memorable backdrop.

Next, ensuring that the proposal aligns with the interests and preferences of your partner is crucial. Reflect on their personality and style to tailor the proposal accordingly. For instance, if they are fond of grand gestures, an elaborately planned surprise might be fitting. Perhaps a picnic set up on the beach with candles and roses. Or maybe they’d prefer a quiet walk on the beach. Will you be inviting friends and family to join after the surprise? Or have intimate dinner reservations just the two of you?

Finally, it is crucial to plan for capturing the moment. Hiring a professional photographer is a perfect way to remember the moment and have amazing photos to share with your family and friends. You’d be surprised how caught up in the moment you may get, having someone there to capture those memories for you can be so special.

Choosing a Photographer for Your Surprise Proposal

When looking for a photographer to capture your surprise proposal, you have a few options. If you are proposing somewhere local, you can ask around for referrals or and check out photographers in your city. If you are proposing sentimental destination or vacation spot you’ll want to find a photographer who is familiar with the area and can suggest the perfect spot for your big moment. I always go location scouting prior to the proposal so I can share photos of the exact spot with my clients to ensure it’s what they are envisioning.

If you don’t have a specific photographer if mind, a great option is to search online for photographers who specialize in surprise proposals. These photographers are experienced in capturing the raw emotions and genuine reactions that unfold during such a special occasion. When choosing a photographer, it is important to review their portfolio and ensure that their style aligns with your vision.

Planning Day of Details for Your Surprise Proposal

Theres a couple things you’ll need to plan for when it comes to proposal day. Choosing the right photographer will ensure that the day goes off without a hitch. As a proposal photographer, once a client has decided to book me to capture their special memory, there are a few key points I make sure to touch on so that we are on the same page leading up to the proposal.

Once we have a date and location picked, I always ask the proposer to send me a photo of them as a couple. Usually I’ll ask for a close up and full body shot or ask that they share their social media so I can creep. The next thing I will do is ask if the proposer is willing to share their phone location with me an hour or so before the proposal. Both this and the photos will allow me to ensure I am following/looking for the right people and don’t miss the big moment.

Once I know who I’m looking for, and where, I will work with the proposer to come up with a “signal”. This signal could be as simple as a hug, or something that feels natural to the relationship. If I’m hiding, this signal is a way for me to have my camera ready and know it’s about to happen. Sometimes I will have the proposer ask me to take a photo of them on their phone and then I offer to take one on my camera too. In that case, I will prep the proposer with what I will say when I’m ready for them to drop to one knee.

Relax and Let the Proposal Unfold

When all of the details are set in place, it’s time to relax and let the day unfold. It’s totally normal to be a ball of anxiety leading up to the proposal but make sure to take the time to soak in the moment. This is a special day and you deserve to enjoy it!
